Good performance, some setup quirks

I signed up for a Self-Managed Ryzen VPS last month, mostly for a Node.js project. Deployment was pretty fast, like within a few minutes after I completed the payment. The performance has been solid, definitely noticed the NVMe storage speed. I appreciate the root access; it makes things a lot easier for custom configurations. What bugged me a little was that getting my custom ISO installed wasn't as straightforward as I hoped; had to go back and forth with their docs a bit. Also, while the dedicated IPv4 worked fine, setting up my Reverse DNS took an extra step I didn't expect. Overall, it's a decent service for the price, but could use some small UI improvements for advanced features.

Managed VPS worked out

I got one of their Managed VPS plans because I just needed something to host my WordPress site without all the sysadmin hassle. It was pretty easy to get going. The free SSL certificate came through fine, and the CDN integration was simple enough to set up. I was a bit worried about transferring my old site, but their server migration service really helped out, took a load off my mind. Everything feels pretty stable. My only minor gripe was that support response times varied a little when I had a small question about a database, but they did get back to me with a solution. For someone like me who just wants things to work without too much fuss, it's been a good fit.

Fast Ubuntu VPS setup

Needed an Ubuntu VPS for a small dev project. Signed up for a Xeon plan. Setup was quick, had it running in under 5 minutes. No issues with shell access. Good value.

Which Webdock plan for a new WordPress site? Ryzen or NVMe?

W WP_Whiz 3 weeks ago ✓ Best Answer
NVMe VPS is generally faster for I/O. WordPress loves fast storage.

Made a huge difference for my old site.

That's what I heard too.

Ryzen CPUs are really good for general purpose stuff, especially if you have dynamic content or lots of users.

So, both are good?

It kinda depends on your traffic and plugins.

Just get the cheapest NVMe plan to start. You can always upgrade.

Good call on upgrading easily.

How do you actually get those free credits they mention? Is it like a coupon code you enter somewhere?

R Ryan 2 months ago
Usually it's through a referral link or a specific landing page when you sign up. I think you put it in during registration, not like a separate coupon field after the fact.
1
T Tara 2 months ago
Afaik, there aren't traditional 'coupon codes' you just type in. It's more about using a specific link someone shares or a promo they're running on a dedicated page when you create your account.

Thinking of moving my small biz site to Webdock. Managed or self-managed VPS?

S ServerSam 1 month ago ✓ Best Answer
Go managed if you're not a server expert. Saves so much headache.

I agree. My time is better spent on other things.

Yeah, especially with updates and security patches.

Managed is definitely worth it for production environments. Don't cheap out on stability.

Good point.

Self-managed if you like tinkering and want full control. And it's cheaper.

True, but only if you know what you're doing.

I started self-managed and regretted it.

Hey guys, thinking about moving my stuff to Webdock from DigitalOcean. Anyone have experience with how they compare, performance-wise?

T Todd T. 2 months ago
I've used both. Webdock's Ryzen plans definitely felt snappier for my Node.js app compared to a similarly priced DO droplet. NVMe makes a big difference.

D David A. 1 month ago
Yeah, I switched for the NVMe and the green energy aspect. Performance is solid, no complaints here. Support is pretty responsive too.

What's the deal with their 'green energy' thing? Is that just marketing fluff or do they actually walk the talk?

K Kevin Doyle 1 month ago
Nah, it's legit. They're pretty transparent about using renewable energy for their data centers. It was a big selling point for me actually.

M Mia K. 1 month ago
They're based in Denmark and really push the green angle. From what I've read, it's a genuine part of their operations, not just some buzzword.

Got an email about Webdock's Black Friday sale last year but missed it. Anyone remember how good the discounts were? Trying to decide if I should wait for the next one or just go for their annual billing discount now.

D Deepak91 1 week ago
I snagged a Ryzen VPS last Black Friday. It was a pretty sweet deal, something like 30-40% off for the first year, I think. Much better than the regular annual discount.

D Deepak91 1 week ago
Mostly on new sign-ups or upgrades, if I remember right. Not sure if it applies to existing services.

S Sneha 1 week ago
Wow, that's significant! Was it on specific plans or across the board?
1
P PankajS 1 week ago
I usually just rely on the annual billing discount. It's consistent and you don't have to wait. Never seen their Black Friday sale be a game-changer for existing customers.

S Sneha 1 week ago
That's my thought too. If it's only for new customers, then waiting might not be worth it.
4
R RanjitK 1 week ago
Yeah, usually these big sales are geared towards new users to get them in the door.

R Rahul87 1 week ago
I got some free credits a while back through a referral link. Those helped offset the cost quite a bit. Might be worth looking for one of those if you're a new customer.

S Sneha 1 week ago
Good point. I'll check if there are any active referral programs.

Thinking of moving my dev environment to Webdock, specifically eyeing their Ryzen VPS plans. Currently on DigitalOcean but the cost is adding up. Anyone made the switch and noticed a big difference?

P PriyaM 1 month ago
I'm still on DO, but I've heard good things about Webdock's Ryzen. My main concern is data center locations. Are they as spread out as DigitalOcean?
6
A AnjaliSharma 1 month ago
They have good options, but maybe not *as many* as DO. Depends where you need your servers.
5
V VikramS 1 month ago
Yeah, their main ones are in Europe and North America. Worth checking if they have one close to your target audience.

My colleague tried Webdock for a while for a Python app. Said it was fast but the support response times weren't always instant compared to what he was used to. Might just be his experience though.

R RaviK 1 month ago
Hmm, good to know. I value quick support.

I moved my main dev server from DO to Webdock Ryzen 2 months ago. The performance jump was noticeable, especially for compiling larger projects. Plus, the price for similar specs was definitely better. No regrets.
10
A AnjaliSharma 1 month ago
It's different, but I found it pretty straightforward. Takes a bit to get used to if you're deep into DO's UI, but nothing major.

Glad to hear! What about the control panel experience? Is it as intuitive?

Is it easy to upgrade your server plan with them? Like if I start small and need more resources later, is it a hassle?

B Brett 2 months ago
Super easy. Just a few clicks in the control panel and it applies pretty much instantly. No downtime needed for me when I bumped up my RAM.
4
B Beth 2 months ago
Yeah, I've upgraded a couple of times. Smooth sailing. They don't make you jump through hoops.
